Firefighters
Firefighters, or firemen as they are sometimes called, are a group of people who have a very dangerous job. They are first responders to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and other disasters that threaten human life and property.
The FDNY is organized into five borough commands, led by the borough commanders (Deputy Chiefs), who also have assistant chiefs to assist them. Each division has between four and seven battalions. A battalion is made up of between four to five engine companies, two ladder companies, a rescue company, a squad company and a hazardous materials company.
The work of firefighters is demanding and requires a high level of skill and dedication. In addition, it offers a strong sense of camaraderie. On average, firefighters earn $55,290. They rank 67th among all detailed occupations with a wage GINI coefficient of 0.285, meaning that wages are distributed more evenly for firefighters than for the entire labor force.
First Responders
During an emergency or disaster, first responders are the people who are most often on the scene. They may be law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics or other emergency medical services personnel. In rural areas, these first responders may also be police officers or public safety telecommunicators/dispatchers.
Although the term first responder often used in a general sense, it originally refers to an emergency medical level of service. A person with this certification is able to do things like administer CPR, use a defibrillator or control bleeding before the arrival of an ambulance.
For a long time, first responders have been at the forefront of responding to emergencies and disasters. It’s important that they well-trained to know what to do and how to prepare for different types of situations. They should also be familiar with the emergency protocols of their jurisdiction. This will help them prioritize their response and provide the best care to their patients.
